How to Wear: Leggings

Wednesday, December 9, 2009

Leggings don't usually fit into the fall runways- but not in 2009- that's for sure. From Marc Jacob's disco-esque version to Tibi's back-to-basics approach, the once-very-popular trend is back, hot and happening. You've got to stick to a very important notion, when it comes to leggings, though. These are not pants. They're not cropped pants nor are they skinny jeans. They're merely footless tights, which like sisters fishnets and Spanx, fall into the hosiery category. So, they're obiously undergarments. And now do you run about town without covering your fishnets? Unless you're GaGa, we hope not. It's crucial that you pair them with tops that cover the back-side hills. But that doesn't also mean wearing them the "Seef" way. You know, those girls in Seef who pair red leggings with knee-reaching neon tees and yellow ballet flats. That's not good.

A basic-chic way to top leggings is to go with a basic white tee (if you've got the budget, we recommend a longer The Row, stocked at Al Othman) polished with a luxe Balmain tuxedo wool jacket. Shoes? You can't go too wrong with Christian Louboutin's Fred glitter lace-up shoes. Or if uber-funky is not your thing, polish it off with Loub's Mamimo 140 platform shoe boots. Add in a couple of street-found-accessories (a vintage Anne Klein bangle will leave you in fabulousity). Complete the look with a bold, statement mini messenger bag.

For a night on the town, shock the crowds with statement leggings- say the fancy Louis Vuitton's (above) or a shimmering metallic version. Silvers will look devine, too. If you're going with metallics, then a hot choice is to add a romantic ruffled blouse under a tough jacket. All you need is a couple of bangles and a chic clutch and you'll be dancing through the night!
